Android App for Outright

Dr. Dave's IT Support, LLC
suggested this on March 18, 2011 10:38 AM

I am in the process of deciding whether or not to use Outright or continue to use QuickBooks Pro 2010. I would like to see Outright have an Android App that would allow total integration with the cloud to enter mileage using the built in Google Navigation GPS that would record business trips to have ready for tax preparation as well as all of the other Outright functionality.

Outright

I'm not sure about the functions mentioned above (GPS, etc.), but at the very least, Outright needs to become more mobile. I'm an Android user, so an Android app would be beneficial for my business, so I'm sure that apps for other devices would be beneficial for others as well. It would allow us to input expenses, view our reports, etc. on the road, wherever we are. Becoming more versatile.

Since mobility is rapidly growing, Outright would benefit the most for providing these features. Outright would see tremendous growth, if mobile apps were provided.

I'll second that recommendation.  Outright's an awesome app and it would be really cool to use it on my Droid phone and T-Mobile Slate

We would like to add to this.  We are starting with Outright b/c of its ease of use on desktop, but as we are on the road for 90% of business, an android app would be great.

Thanks for all the great feedback.  A mobile strategy is definitely on the road map, but there's no timeline at this point.  We'll keep you posted though as updates become available.

Sounds like a great suggestion. A mileage feature on an Outright app would pair perfectly with Outright's niche appeal to entrepreneurs/small biz community. There's been a long-felt need for a Google Maps mileage tracker for independent contractors/small businesses, and a void in the marketplace of one.

I would love an outright android app, so I could enter cash purchases right away instead of taking all receipts, or notes to the computer at the end of the day in order to log in, then record.

One thing that would be really useful would be to allow me to enter an expense on the phone and take a picture of the receipt.

I'm on the fence about which accounting software to get and mobility is a huge factor for me. I have an Android and want to be able to send invoices on the go and have my contacts synced with my gmail and phone contacts so it's all at one location. If Outright had this I wouldn't think twice and would sign up - since it doesn't I'm still fishing to see if someone else does have it. Even if I knew that you were in the process of creating it I would jump on board, but since it seems still up in the air, I'll keep looking around.

@mchaney and @deshawnmarie and all android users, We DO love you. There's no need to either berate or be nice to us. We WILL do this. We will. I don't take the 'planned' state of a thread lightly. It might seem that way, and, if so, I'm sorry. I don't have a date for you now, but, as I've said before, please feel free to send me an email (and include which phone you have) to get onto the list of folks who will see early versions. Any updates on a timeline since 8/31/11?

I've been waiting a long time for this. iPhone users got theirs, and am waiting for Android (my husband on his Blackberry is outta luck.)

We're debating moving to QuickBooks, since paying $9.95 a month for this service just to be able to do it out of a browser, but not fully mobile, seems like a bit much to pay for only partial convenience...

I'm ready for the Android app, please! :)

I love the site - I'm an accountant and one of my clients introduced me to it. She switched from Quickbook's monthly fee and is now using Outright. It's fantastic for small businesses who don't need all the bells and whistles (and complications) with Quickbooks. I'd just love to be able to enter mileage, expenses and maybe even snap pics of receipts from my Android mobile phone. Thanks for your work toward making this happen.

Just checking back in with you guys. First of all - Thank you guys for posting on these forums. We really do monitor them closely, and I can assure you we talk about this thread on a regular basis.

Believe me when I say that we hear you: You want an Outright Android App! I personally use an android phone (Galaxy Nexus) and I would love to have the app myself! Unfortunately, at this time, I don't have any new news to share on the development of the Android App. I know that isn't the answer you guys are looking for, and it's not one I particularly love giving, but it's important for us to be as forthright and honest with you guys as possible.

In the meantime, we'd love to continue to add to our already-healthy list of users who would be willing to help us test when we arrive to that point in the process (and it is also worth noting that they will be the first ones to get their hands on the app). If you are interested in adding your name to that list feel free to post here or continue to email Kirby (kirby@outright.com).

In addition, any new information we have will be posted here first, so if you are subscribed to this thread you will be get the word as soon as we give it.

Thanks!

Jared,

Thanks for your response, but obviously us Android users are not a priority to your company or else you would know the status and even more importantly, we would have something by now. The fact that you already have one for iOS even though there are more android devices in the world is mind boggling and extremely frustrating. All the main work has already been done, you just have to hire a contractor to do the android version. Could be done in less than a month if you actually tried.

Yes I would love an Android app for outright, Im a self employed musician who travels worldwide 38 countries thus far and of course I have worldwide expenses to track :-) and worldwide income to enter ;-) sometimes I have to wait weeks before updating records. An app would ease the pain. It would be awesome to start 2013 with and Outright Android App!!!

Mchaney,

Since you seem to know everything about this, why don't you offer your services to outright for free like they are offering to you?  If you aren't willing to do that, then I would like you to choose between the following three optioins:

A) Go buy an iPhone

B) Quit using outright

C) STFU

It blows my mind how much people on this forum bitch about the features that a free product offers.  And if you pay $10 per month like some of the rest, that's still no justification for you to say the things you've said.  I assume that almost everyone here has built their own business.  If you have, you know you had to make tough decisions with regarding how to use the resources you had (time and money).  Obviously, with unlimited capital and/or manpower, outright would make this a priority.  Since they aren't, I can only assume there are bigger fish to fry or ways they feel their money is better spent (such as bringing in new customers).  This entitlement attitude is what is ruining America right now.  Customers of mine that try to tell me how to run my business quickly become former customers of mine (my decision, not theirs).  Lucky for you, it seems that outright prefers customer service more than I do.

As much as I hate to agree with such a harsh comment, gamedayevents is right. Outright is providing a free service to us that we can use on our Android devices right now. It's not the easiest or most efficient way of tracking but it works and it's free. As we all know, you need to target your largest customer base first. For mobile apps, that's the Iphone. The Android app will come with time. Good things come to those who wait. We've already got Outright ;-) -Rob

1) Some of us are actually paying customer and not freeloaders. Also, just because you might not be paying for a product, doesn't mean the company isnt making money off you and your data.

2) They are owned by a company that does practically have unlimited capital.

3) Its unfortunately way to common for companies that to drag customers along with promises of an upcoming feature that is never delivered.

4) I didn't make any threats of leaving or anything that was "harsh". I was just blunt and laid out the reality of the situation. I didn't make any demands at all as I would have had to say "or else" for it to be a demand. As I just said earlier, I just laid out whats really going on. I do IT Consulting and am very familiar with providing SaaS services and thats what this is, not some community open source project.

I agree with mchaney. I do IT as well, and now since godaddy has bought them up, lack of capital is not an excuse... Unfortunately I am more worried about godaddy quality control and basic ability to keep it improving than capital... lets just hope for the best, and please, crank out the android app already!

If both of you are in IT and know how easy this is to do, why aren't you offering your services free to outright, like they do to us?  Apparently, neither of you have ever purchased a business before.  When you buy a business, you don't open up all your financial resources to that company just because you now own it.  So GoDaddy purchasing outright is no guarantee to unlimited budgets to satisfy customers.

Android app makes all the sense in the world. I would like to commit to using outright as it seems really great, but without a mobile app and my acct team all on Android its tough. I guess as a new comer the big concern I have is how old this thread is. March of 2011? From the outside it sure does not seem like a priority.

The ironic thing that I am finding is so many business assume that the Iphone is the choice of phone for business...when really it is not.  The Iphone is a fad. It really is too tiny to be functional when you have an online business your running such as myself. I need a phone that I can see and truly work from.  I have to use an Android for that purpose.  It is just more functional in a business sense. I use the LG Intution..and it's an amazing phone or phablet. LOVE it for business.  I like Iphones too but it's just an expensive eye candy toy. Typing on them and getting things done with Office products are not functional.  Just my 2 cents.

OK, we're coming up on the 2 YEAR anniversary of this request. I understand that making an app for android is much harder than for iPhone, but really, a room full of monkeys could have hacked out the worlds greatest novel AND an app by now.

Seriously though, make the app work for the biggest platforms first, then tweak from there.

my 2 cents as an Android user:  yes, it will be great, and it will save me a couple hours a month. Yes, the GPS mileage tracking would be huge and let me quit using a different phone app for that. GoDaddy might consider just buying a GPS app rather investing than the time, trouble and expense of doing so, and in that vein, I would recommend the app I settled on after trying 3 or 4: TripLog GPS Mileage Tracker.  Finally, Android is my favorite, but is NOT the prevalent OS in the USA, which is where I imagine most OutRight users live and work.

Grown-ups need to get a perpective, some patience, and enjoy life instead of getting stressed about an obscure little app to load on their phones.  Take on world hunger or citizen hate with all that energy!

@Mark Kraus

When you say not top OS do you mean all OS's like WIndows or just Smartphone OS?

The reason I ask because of the Smartphone OS, Android is by far the top OS in the US with around 52% and Apple second at just under 38%. Now Apple is always fighting with Samsung as the top Smartphone vendor in the US and I think currently leads, but that is against just a single, albeit large, vendor.

So in essence when Outright is looking at the largest Smartphone base it would be Android.

Although I agree people need some patience. It obviously is not going to help by getting all worked up. Although forums like this are designed to express wishes and wants for products they use. As a form Product Manager this is exactly what the company wants. It helps more than most will ever know.

Backatcha vAus Tek :    I'm expert in residential real estate, not in mobile communications, but this is from a CNET story dated Novemrber 27, 2012:

According to new data published today by research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, iOS was able to nab 48.1 percent of the U.S. smartphone market during the 12-week period ended October 28, just beating out Android's 46.7 percent share.

But elsewhere around the world, iOS isn't nearly as popular. According to the research firm, Android was running on 73.9 percent of all smartphones purchased in Germany during the same period. Android took 81.7 percent of Spain's smartphone market."

Note that they are speaking of smartphone operating systems, namely iOS (apple/iphone) vs Android, with 48.1 being IOS, 46.7% to Android, and the balance presumably going to also-rans Windows and Blackberry.  I'm not an argumentative sort of guy, but I look for for some info from reputable sources versus whoever seems to be dominating various blogs and community forums.

In any case, we can all congratulate ourselves on being smart enough to: A - keep track of our expenses and incomes B - use a great program like Outright, whether we pay the $99/year or not!  And those of us smart enough to use Android devices can look forward to the day (soon, I hope) when we have our mobile app.

Gggrrrrrr!!!!  Internet journalism (all journalism, actually, is SO FREAKING AGGFRAVATING!   SO, above, I quote CNET.  Then, I take a look at ZDNet, another mainstream tech source, and I read this, published in February 2013:

"

Apple first, Samsung second in U.S. smartphone market

Summary: According to latest comScore figures, Apple is ranked as the top smartphone maker in the U.S., almost double Samsung's share. But Android rules the roost in terms of smartphone platform—which isn't all that surprising.By for Between the Lines |February  6, 2013 -- 21:23 GMT (13:23 PST)

Latest figures from comScore have put the smartphone crown firmly on Apple's head, after the iPhone maker ranked in first over Samsung in U.S. market share.

Out of 125.9 million U.S. smartphone owners—more than half of the U.S. population—Apple ranked as the top smartphone maker with 36.3 percent share, compared to Samsung's share of almost half that, at 21.3 percent.  However, Android still remains the most popular platform for the U.S. market. Google's Android mobile operating system took more than half of the U.S. platform share at 53.4 percent, while iOS took 36.3 percent.

It's worth noting, this report focuses on U.S. smartphone market share only, and not mobile—such as feature phones—as a whole. Otherwise, that would likely be an entirely different picture, with Nokia and Samsung higher up the list, with Apple likely further down.

Enough already - Maybe you are right vAus Tek, maybe i am, maybe the media is too biased for us to ever really know.   I'll go back to helping people with their real estate, and I will do it with my Motorola Droid Maxx HD, and let the techies deal with smartphone rankings.  I wonder, if years ago, people took sides over which #2 pencil was better, if Olivetti typewriters were better than Smith Coronas, and whether either let them do their business better, write home to family more charmingly, or if they perhaps had better things to do with their time!  Does anyone know if the magazine "Living Simply" still exists, or better yet, "Mother Earh News??"

Being able to add receipts from every device (desktop, tablet, iDevice, Android) is the main piece needed to make Outright shine! The current feature on the iPhone/iPad app allows this but once your receipt is in there, it's not viewable or downloadable - in other words, not useful. I look forward to this next logical step from Outright!! Thx for listening.

Wow!!!  I just found this company by recommendation.  After reading this forum, I too am an android user.  I'm really shocked at the level of commitment to Apple, but not Android considered the world we are in today.  I would think after 2 years this would have been on your list.  I think, once people start taking their business else where than the effects of the lost in customers i.e. revenue may get their attention.  I was excited about this application, until I went to the Play Store and it wasn't there.  Just to find out it's all about Apple.

Just my two cents.

Hi there,

It's Kirby, the Director of Mobile Applications here at Outright.

First, I want to say that I really appreciate the enthusiasm of the people in this forum. Thanks for advocating for your needs. Next, we are, many of us here too, Android users who want to offer Outright on that platform.

However, I do want to make sure that you all can make the right decisions for your business.

We are not yet working on an Android version of the app, and we will not be able to begin working on it until 2014.

I do want to continue to talk to you about how you'd like to use Outright on your phone. Please emailfeedback@outright.com if you'd like contribute.

We’re currently using all of our resources to make sure Outright’s core features remain as robust as ever. That said, I’m very sorry if this news is disappointing and I understand your frustration.

Thank you for being an Outright user.

Not sure where they hired those new mobile developers from but I would say that they are not very interested in the android platform.

Thank You so much! I've been waiting a long time for this app! Please be sure to make it compatible with Thunderc on google play. Basically Lg Optimus compatible. Can't wait to download it!

This that and everything else

Hey paint is thicker than water! You are not reading that post correctly. It was posted back in Dec. 17th 2012. I just reposted to show people what was said back then. Not much progress has occured.

@this that  @paint is thicker - Turns out the mobile developers we hired were IOS guys... sorry about that.  Here's a re-post of the current status as provided by Kirby, our mobile apps product manager:

=====

Is it possible to create an API so that myself or another third party can make our own app? Two years and counting waiting for an app is rediculous.

Sorry, I am not Apple's fan and all my devices are using Android to operate. I believe a lot of Outright customers are same as me - waiting for Outright Android App. Therefore, when I saw your message above saying " We are not yet working on an Android version of the app, and we will not be able to begin working on it until 2014", I feel very disappointed. Your company said you were Mint alternative. Mint has Android App for awhile but your company is still holding this project. I have no idea why your company just did the favor to Apple's fans, not Android's fans. But if your company doesn't resolve this issue as soon as possible, your company will lose a lot of users. Further, I would like your software can create invoice which can send to our customers. Thanks.

I'm switched from ipad/iphone to all android at this point.  I'm stuck having to use outright now on my pc which isn't why I started using this software.  PLEASE get an android app going soon.  2014 is WAY too far off.

Just moved from iPhone to Android. Used outright app mainly to track expenses. Now I am using Expensify, which is a great app for keeping track of expenses.

Um yeah.  If you haven't done something that has been "Planned" for over two years, you aren't actually serious about doing it.  Wishes are not plans.

Please just be straight with us and tell us that Outright doesn't support Android and has no current plans to do so.  Then, remove the "Planned" status.

Although I'd really love a dedicated app, it may also be possible to cut your development time by creating a "responsive design" to your web-site that allows it to function like a web app.  We decided to go that route for our web site because 1) it uses the existing infra-structure already working on your web site, 2) (related) it means you don't have to independently create 2, 3, 4, or 5 separate code bases and update each, each time a new feature is added, and then go through the process of having the updated app approved by the stores again, and 3) it means you don't have to pay the developers fees for getting your app up on iTunes, Android Play, MS Phone Store, etc.

Just found out about Outright through an eBay customer Rep, of all places. Went to Google Play to download an app, so that I can scan receipts and checks... and.. you guys don't have an Android APP!!!! it's 2013, come on, most smartphone users have Androids, this isn't the way to expand your customer base.. Would also love to see better filtering and sorting capabilities when viewing transactions in a list.

I just found Outright through another Etsy seller and it is just want I needed now that my business is picking up. Naturally, I went looking for the Android app since most of what I do is through my HTC One, and was just as amazed as everyone else here that there is no app! Of course, I was even more amazed as I read through this thread that it's not even in development! Especially since I just read that Q2 2013 metrics show 10% more apps are downloaded for Android than for iOS. (http://venturebeat.com/2013/07/31/android-in-app-downloads/#0ytozswt83AwYgWm.99)

Yes, an Android app would be awesome. And yes, the ability to scan receipts would be extremely time saving. But I am seriously rethinking using this app:

December: Great news everyone! We've hired new developers - an Android app is surely in the works!

July: Oops - turns out they were iOS guys. Sorry 'bout that. Just sit tight and an Android app will happen some day.

Not exactly a vote of confidence for me when a company tries to appease it's customers by telling them they hired the wrong people.

I only have Android devices and I don't ever plan to have an Apple device.  So what if they aren't working on an Android version?   Outright is the most awesome thing since sliced bread.  I won't let the fact they are stupidly ignoring android to interfere with me using the easiest bookkeeping tool that exists.  I wish I never subscribed to this thread because all I see is negativity.

Yes it is true they are dumb for not making the android app - especially after all the comments here.  However, nothing anyone says can change the fact that they are geniuses for making the best bookkeeping tool out there with their web based service.  All these people saying they are reconsidering to not use Outright because there is no Android App are being illogical.   That's like saying they won't breath air because they prefer to their air to smell like cherries.

I bought it anyway because it's the only app that actually does eBay and Amazon imports with invoicing and simplistic accounting. This would be a huge boost though, since I do most of my work on my S3.

We are currently working on an Android device and hope to have one out in the near future. However we currently do not have an ETA on this. If you would please take our survey as to how you would use an Android app to help you run your business day to day, this will greatly assist us in figuring out how to best design the app for our users: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BVSPXJV

David,

You have been telling us the exact same thing since 2011.  We don't believe you anymore.  Read this entire thread to see just how thoroughly you have failed to follow through on your promises.

You don't need more information from us - you need to make it a priority and get it done instead of talking about it.  i.e. Put up or shut up.

Thanks,

Surely in the 2+ years this has been requested one programmer qualified to create apps for Android could have been found and retained.  Ignoring at least half of your potential market for all this time seems like a poor choice.  Maybe things will be different moving forward and Outright under the GoDaddy name will become more of a competitor.

Just so y'all know, I'm activating my Note 2 as I type this. I'm not switching to iCrap so I can use your software. I love my Android and I'm keeping it!

Of course they COULD have created an Android app, but Outright was acquired by GoDaddy.  The only "products" that GoDaddy is interested in are their ads.  Why support existing customers when you can just sign up new ones?

One good developer could have a very functional app complete in a month.  But, GoDaddy despises its customers, so why bother?

Customer: "When will the promised Android App be complete?"
GoDaddy: "We have Jean-Claude Van Damme!  Watch our commercials and be content."

Kirby said no development until 2014... and then after that David says its already under development?  Which one is lying?  Im going to guess nothing is in development yet.  good thing my Note 3 makes the full site somewhat usable.  I'll admit the iOS app i used to use wasnt that great to begin with, so if the android version is like that then dont worry about it, its not fully functional anyways.

I also have just created a paid account. I would just like to say, whoever above commeted about using resourses for the most user's first is so out of touch with the tech industry bad. Android activates Approximately 1.5 million phones a day. So where do you get your comment that they have to use there resources on the phone that more people use?

Just get tired of the old "apple came first and sell more". Business are going to have to wake up. And YES, I pay

This thread is horrible. Outright is failure to not have a Android app yet.  How many surveys could you possibly need to create a Android App.  Question to the users. What have you found to help me switch from this service?
